Spring Is Just Around the Corner! - One Man and a Lady Bug - Pest Control Calgary

It’s almost that lively time of year again! The sun is setting later and later and the temperature is whispering the promise that sweater weather is nearly upon us. While spring is great news for us, it’s also great news for those buzzing little pests we managed to forget about over the winter months. Wasps and mosquitoes are shedding their winter jackets along with us, but don’t worry. There’s a few ways you can prepare yourself to handle the little nuisances before they start to really bug you this spring.

We can all agree that mosquitoes are nature’s most annoying insect, but it doesn’t have to be difficult to make sure mosquitoes know they aren’t welcome to your backyard parties. When you start to plant your flower beds, consider adding in lavender to this year’s garden. Mosquitos can’t stand lavender, and you can use the flower to make your own natural repellent. Add citronella candles to your patio decor and try using yellow light bulbs—mosquitoes and other insects don’t seem to find yellow lights nearly as attractive as white lights. Another good trick for warding off the little pests is using a combination of 100% pure peppermint oil and water in a spray bottle and spritzing the perimeter of your home and garden. This can be used both indoors and outdoors and it not only works, but it smells fresh and inviting!

Wasp control is a little more complicated, as wasps tend to be more of a threat. It’s never a bad idea to set up a fake wasp’s nest to deter them from your yard, since a queen will not build a nest where one is already present. If making your own isn’t your cup of tea, you can find fake nests at any home and garden store. Cleaning up any and all garbage that contains food or drink is also a good idea. Wasps love sugar, and the less opportunity they have to find it in your yard, the less they will come visit.

These are just a few ways you can start the spring and summer battle against bugs, but if all else fails and your pests become an issue, give our technicians a call. If you’re looking for a more intensive way to prevent insect invasion into your home and yard, we offer a spray treatment that will protect your lawn and trees. These sprays are environmentally friendly and we offer one time applications as well as maintenance programs if the problem persists. Either way, give us a call—we are more than happy to help you assess your pesky situation!
